about
With Nelle, there was an immediate knowing. A sense that our timeline as separate selves and our timeline together was hazy and blended; that I had always known and loved her, and that I always would. We each made art about it in different ways, and at different times, to process these feelings. Early on, she gave me a folder of photoshopped photos, cutout images of our previous selves superimposed into the same place – a drunken barbeque, bed, my parent's backyard, a show. It was funny, and I felt the truth of it in my gut. I was greedy for her entire life. When I visited her hometown, we held hands in the 30-degree weather and I imagined myself as a young short-order cook at her college diner.
I wrote this song for her birthday. And as I wrote I realized: I'm so glad she didn't know me in my 20s. It wasn't the right time. But I'm so glad I know her now. Where will our timeline go next? I'm still greedy for our future.
lyrics
I went back in time
To Iowa city.
It felt good and right
To be where you lived.
I got a job
(They didn’t know that I was from the future)
Dropping baskets of fries
At The Hamburg Inn
One day you came in alone
And sat at the counter
Your face was as long as winter
Your whole body blue
I gathered my courage
And stared down the boiling oil
I spun around to drop off your food
These are the first words I said you:
I made you pancakes
Yes, I followed the directions
I made you coffee
But I let it sit out to get cool
Don’t be so down
It all shakes out for you
Sooner or later
You’re bound to get some
I went back in time
To tell you I love you
But I’m glad that I didn’t
What if I jinxed it?
I couldn’t risk
Not getting married to you
